Michel CYWIE

One of the legendary composers who wrote the musical history of the French-speaking world

Michel talks about his life and career:

"I was born in 1954, my mother loved Italian opera and if it hadn't been for the war, she would certainly have made a career of singing. I started playing the piano when I was three or four years old.

I had an excellent ear and an absolute laziness to read music. I learned by listening and watching my teacher's hands. So I learned Mozart the same way I learned the Beatles, by singing and copying the tunes I liked.

My lack of discipline got me "expelled" from the municipal conservatory, but I was young and although a bit traumatised, I was able to bounce back. I didn't want to have anything to do with music theory or academic lessons.

I turned to popular music, the pop singers of the 60s and 70s. Hello Buddies in France. This was the beginning of Johnny Hallyday, Sylvie Vartan, Eddie Mitchell, Frank Alamo, Sheila and among this crowd, a young singer: the little prince.

Here is the background and history of my first composition

I was on holiday with my parents in Riccione on the Adriatic. The Italian radio stations were broadcasting Gigliota Cinquetti.

One morning, as I was walking down the street, I thought I recognized from a distance the figure of Stella, a French starlet whose record was playing on Europe1. As I was a subscriber to Salut les copains magazine, I had seen his picture in the magazine's articles.

I walk down the street, and in a very direct way, I approach her: "Are you Stella?"

Happy to have been recognised by a fan, she was about to sign my autograph. But the object of my interest was different. I asked her: "How can I make a record? And yes, there was the Little Prince, so why not me? She gave me some information, and I asked her the address of her record company: Vogue Productions. I needed songs and to prepare for the audition.

First step, the songs! I didn't have a piano, but the excitement and inspiration was enough. I took advantage of the time my parents were at the beach to squat in their room and write my first two songs.

In retrospect, they were pretty much in keeping with the times and public taste... two twists. I didn't want to keep these two imperishable works for myself, I rushed to the beach and tested them on my parents and the surrounding neighbours.

Hey guys, there's Jonhy Hallyday coming to Dadada...

I was like a madman!!!! It couldn't end there.

We were supposed to go back to Alsace (France) where we lived. But I had to go to Villetaneuse (France) to the Vogue Productions. And nothing and no one was going to stand in my way. So my parents decided to make a diversion, one could even say a diversion to PARIS.

They made an appointment for me with the studio, and I had my first audition. The atmosphere was a bit cold, the microphone was not adapted to my height, could not be adjusted, and I had to lift my chin. The sound engineer and my parents were behind the window in the booth. I think they were overwhelmed.

I felt a bit isolated, I had a bit of stage fright.

But then I started. When I stopped, the soundman came to me. He said, "It's not bad, but your voice is changing."

A bit shy and confused, I did not ask him what it meant.

- "You must come back later..."

I asked him how long it would take?

– “5, 6 years”

I couldn't understand what was in my voice and why it was taking so long! So I left, my parents seemed relieved, and I felt like I had hit an iceberg and was being called Titanic !

My first message is never give up on your dream and believe in yourself.

Keep feeding your passion and love for Art. When you are very good, someone will be touched and doors will open!
