A silent film masterpiece that will be played for the pleasure of all.
The innovation here is the synchronization between the images and music which provide a moment of musical and visual dream to the spectator, so that he does not only watch an “old” silent film but contributes to the piece thanks to the musical excellence of the 7th Art Orchestra, the Soprano Laura Ansaldi, led by Bernard Duc, Swiss composer and conductor.
THE CONDUCTOR BERNARD DUC: Swiss composer and conductor. He studied film music, composition and orchestral conducting at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. His talent and above all his willingness to always give the best of himself earned him the position of assistant conductor of the Berklee Contemporary Symphony Orchestra. He was also selected to join the highly competitive Berklee Silent Film Orchestra as composer and conductor. With this ensemble, he conducted the music for “The Phantom of the Opera” as well as his composition for “The Freshman” during two American film-concert tours.
THE SOPRANO LAURA ANSALDI: The voice of Christine: Laura has often performed the role of Christine in the musical “The phantom of the opera” of Andrew Lloyd-Webber. She likes to involve herself in special projects like the « Memorial Maria Callas » where she was the main soprano singing and acting while on the screen were projected images of Maria Callas’ life or in “Verdi in the original tuning” there she performed a series of Giuseppe Verdi’s operas in the original tuning he composed with.
THE ORCHESTRA:The 7th Art Orchestra is a musical ensemble whose vocation is the interpretation of film music, especially during film concerts. The musicians are carefully selected among the best professionals in Switzerland. Unlike to other musical ensembles that focus solely on the musical aspect, the understanding of the different scenes of the film plays a central role in the working process of the 7th Art Orchestra, allowing the music to no longer be just a gloss over the picture, but to have his own life inside the story of the movie and be an integral part of the narration.
THE MOVIE: The shown version of the film is probably the best there is and, having been specially designed for this musical score, it is also unique. It was assembled by Bret Wood of Kino Lorber using the digital restoration reference made by the iconic restorer, David Shepard. Our version of the film includes the hand-colored masked ball room scene and the early dance scenes are shown at 20 frames per second, which gives a more natural result than the 16 frames per second of the Shepard version.
